Research

The Brain Center is continuously exploring new solutions to neurological care. By funding cutting edge research and fostering scientific collaborations, The Brain Center enables researchers in personalized medicine and biomedical engineering to focus their efforts on neuroscience with specific applications. Examples of research initiatives include:

Alzheimer’s Therapy – collaboration between Noble Prize Laureate Dr. Andrew Schally, MD, PhD, affiliated with the Miami Veterans Administration and University of Miami and Tomas R. Guillarte, PhD, Dean of the Robert Stempel College of Public Health and Social Services at FIU. The project is testing a neuropeptide characterized by Dr. Schally as a possible therapy for Alzheimer’s and is currently in animal trials.

Nanotechnology for Personalized Medicine – led by Sakhrat Khizroev, PhD, Professor of Electrical Engineering and Cellular Biology at FIU. Using magnetoelectric nanoparticles (MENs), the work explores the delivery of electronic stimulation to specific areas of the brain as personalized “pin-point” treatment for neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson’s, Essential Tremor and Autism.
