Tomas R. Guilarte, PhD
Respected scientist, educator and academic leader, Tomás R. Guilarte, PhD, became Dean of Robert Stempel College of Public Health & Social Work at Florida International University (FIU) in January 2016. He joined FIU after serving as the inaugural Leon Hess Professor and Chairman of the Department of Environmental Health Sciences at Columbia University-Mailman School of Public Health in the City of New York.
Prior to Columbia, Guilarte received his doctorate and spent three decades as a professor and researcher in the Department of Environmental Health Sciences at the Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health.
Guilarte’s research explores the impact of environmental pollutants on neurological and mental disease. His work uses behavioral, cellular and molecular approaches, ranging from studies using primary culture of brain cells to the application of brain imaging technologies.
